— General & Cost

The questions everyone asks first.

Professional epoxy garage floor installations in Utah typically run $5–$12 per square foot in 2026 depending on the coating system, prep work required, and decorative finish chosen.

A standard 2-car garage (about 400 square feet) generally falls between $2,000 and $4,800. Larger 3-car garages or shops with significant concrete prep can run $5,000–$9,000+.

We provide written quotes with no surprise add-ons, and hold the price for 30 days. Beware of contractors quoting by phone without seeing the slab — the prep work is what drives real cost.

Hoopes Brothers Epoxy services a 200-mile corridor from Nephi, Utah north through Utah Valley, Salt Lake County, Park City, Heber Valley, and up into Star Valley, Wyoming — including Alpine and Afton.

Most residential garages complete in one day with a polyaspartic system. Multi-layer epoxy systems may take two days to fully cure between coats.

Walk-on traffic is fine in 24 hours. Vehicles can return in 48–72 hours. Commercial projects (warehouses, restaurants) scale with square footage — we’ll give you a clear timeline in your written estimate.

Five critical questions to ask any contractor before signing a quote:

1. What prep method do you use — grinder or shot blast? Acid etching alone isn’t enough.
2. Do you moisture-test the slab? Moisture transmission is the #1 cause of coating failure.
3. What system are you installing, and who manufactures it? Get the brand and product line.
4. Is the warranty in writing, and what does it cover? Vague verbal promises don’t hold up.
5. Are you the installer, or do you subcontract? Subcontractors mean inconsistent quality.

Avoid anyone who quotes by phone without seeing the slab in person.

— Materials & Systems

Understanding what goes on the floor.

Epoxy is a slower-curing two-part thermoset that creates a hard, chemical-resistant film. It’s strong, affordable, and proven — but slow to cure and not UV-stable on its own.

Polyaspartic is a newer urethane-based coating that cures fast (often same-day), is fully UV-stable, and can be installed in temperatures down to 0°F.

The premium answer: use both. Our standard garage system uses an epoxy base coat for adhesion plus a polyaspartic topcoat for speed, UV stability, and impact resistance. You get the strengths of each without the weaknesses.

Technically yes. Practically — almost always no.

DIY kits use thin water-based epoxy (typically 5–10 mil thick) with no real concrete prep step. Most DIY garage floors fail within 1–3 years from peeling, hot tire pickup, or moisture issues.

The savings on materials usually disappear when you have to redo the whole floor — including grinding off the failed DIY coating before a real system can go down. We’ve quoted dozens of these “redo” jobs. The math never works out.

Real professional systems are 30–80 mil thick (3–8x more material), use 100% solids epoxy or polyaspartic chemistry, and require diamond grinding equipment that costs $5,000+ to rent for a weekend.

A flake floor is a decorative coating system where colored vinyl flakes are broadcast (thrown) into a wet epoxy base coat until full coverage, then sealed with a clear polyaspartic topcoat.

The flakes provide three benefits: visual color depth and pattern, slip-resistant texture, and the ability to hide minor concrete imperfections. Available in dozens of color blends from subtle greys to bold custom mixes.

Flake systems are the most popular choice for residential garages because they hide dirt, look professional, and have the best slip resistance for households with kids or seniors.

Yes — but outdoor coatings require different products than interior garage systems. Standard epoxy will yellow and degrade under UV exposure within a season.

For outdoor surfaces, we install UV-stable, freeze-thaw rated systems designed specifically for Utah and Wyoming exterior conditions. These coatings have textured slip-resistant finishes and hold their color through summer sun exposure and winter freeze-thaw cycles.

Common outdoor applications: patios, pool decks, walkways, porch steps, and outdoor entertainment areas.

— Installation Process

How a real coating goes down.

Yes, with the right system. Standard epoxy needs 50°F+ to cure properly — that limits installation to roughly April through October in Utah and Wyoming garages.

However, polyaspartic and polyurea coatings cure down to 0°F. We install year-round in Utah and Wyoming using cold-cure systems specifically engineered for mountain climates. Star Valley winters don’t stop us.

The trade-off: cold-cure systems cost slightly more than standard epoxy. For a winter install, polyaspartic is the right call regardless.

Yes — but the type of repair matters.

Static (non-moving) cracks get chased open with a crack chaser tool and filled with a flexible polyurea joint filler before coating. The filler bonds to the concrete and flexes with seasonal movement.

Active cracks (still moving from settling or structural issues) need diagnosis to understand why they’re moving before any cosmetic repair. Coating over an active crack just delays the inevitable.

We include crack assessment and moisture testing in every estimate so you know what’s happening underneath before we quote.

Concrete prep is the single most important step. It’s also the step most contractors cut corners on.

Our prep process: diamond grinding (or shot blasting for textured slabs) to open the concrete pores and expose fresh aggregate, moisture testing to check vapor transmission, crack chasing and filling, spall repair on broken edges, and vacuuming and degreasing to remove all dust and contamination.

Cheap contractors skip the grinding (using acid etch instead) and skip moisture testing entirely. That’s why their floors peel.

For standard epoxy systems: April through October in our climate.

For polyaspartic systems: any time of year, even sub-zero temperatures in Star Valley.

The hidden advantage to scheduling in fall/winter: our schedule is less booked, lead times are shorter, and you go into spring with a finished floor ready for the busy season.

— Performance & Durability

What to expect over time.

A professionally installed multi-layer epoxy or polyaspartic system, with proper concrete prep, will last 15–20+ years in mountain climates.

The biggest factor isn’t the climate — it’s the prep work underneath. Coatings fail because of moisture issues, contamination, or insufficient grinding. Not because of cold weather.

We back every install with a 15-year written warranty against peeling, delamination, and hot tire pickup.

The number-one reason: insufficient concrete prep.

If the slab isn’t properly ground or shot-blasted to open the pores, moisture-tested for vapor transmission, and cleaned of contamination, no coating will adhere long-term — regardless of how expensive the materials are.

Hot tire pickup, peeling, bubbling, and delamination almost always trace back to prep shortcuts. Cheap roll-on DIY kits fail for this exact reason.

Other failure modes: applying epoxy below recommended temperature, ignoring moisture vapor emissions, recoating over contaminated old surfaces, or using incompatible products in a layered system.

Hot tire pickup is when warm tires from a recently driven vehicle soften the floor coating and pull pieces of it up when the car is moved.

It’s caused by low-quality DIY coatings, water-based epoxies, or improperly cured installs. The hotter the tire (highway driving, summer heat), the worse it gets.

Professional multi-layer systems with polyaspartic topcoats are specifically engineered to resist hot tire pickup permanently. Polyaspartic doesn’t soften under tire heat the way thin water-based epoxy does.

Epoxy and polyaspartic floors are genuinely low-maintenance compared to bare concrete, carpet, or tile.

Routine care: sweep regularly to remove grit, mop with pH-neutral cleaner or just warm water. A microfiber mop works great.

Avoid: harsh degreasers, acidic cleaners (vinegar included), abrasive scrub pads. These can dull the topcoat finish over time.

For spills: blot up oil, antifreeze, or chemical spills promptly rather than letting them sit. The coating is resistant, not invincible.

After your floor is installed.

Yes. We provide a 15-year written warranty on every installation against peeling, delamination, and hot tire pickup when normal maintenance is followed.

The warranty is honored by the same family that installed your floor — Harrison and Brigg Hoopes. No third-party service contracts, no transfer fees, no fine-print exclusions buried on page 7.

The full warranty terms are provided in writing with every estimate and signed at install completion.

Our standard process: we come back to inspect, diagnose what’s happening, and make it right under warranty. Most warranty calls are minor (a small spot repair or recoat in a high-wear area).
